Election 2008
The Journal’s ballot picks
President - Barack Obama

This country needs to take a new direction.

U.S. Senator - Mark Udall

An energetic advocate for the environment and education.

U.S. Congress - John Salazar

Hard-working representative deserves a third term.

State Board of Education - Jill Brake

Experience, knowledge, energy and focus on early childhood.

State Representative, 58th District - Scott Tipton

A voice for Montezuma County.

State Representative, 59th District - Ellen Roberts

Unopposed, for good reason.

District Attorney, 22nd Judicial District - Mac Myers

Experienced, energetic.

County Commissioner, District 2 - Fred Blackburn

Time for a progressive voice.

County Commissioner, District 3 - Alfred Hughes

Skills and vision to move Montezuma County carefully forward.

Supreme Court, Court of Appeals - Retain all

Retention panels gave thumbs up.

Montezuma County Judge Todd Jay Plewe - Retain

Strong skills and caring attitude.

Amendment 46 - No

Unnecessary ban on affirmation action does not belong in Colorado Constitution.

Amendment 47 - No

So-called right-to-work law is one of three anti-union measures that have threatened to set off a labor-management conflict Colorado does not need. In response, union activists put four deliberately provocative amendments on the ballot that business found objectionable. After negotiating with business leaders for help in defeating Amendments 47, 49 and 54, the unions withdrew their ballot measures.

Amendment 48 - No

A legal nightmare, and not the best way to reduce abortion.

Amendment 49 - No

See Amendment 47. Anti-union constitutional change would solve nothing, save nothing.

Amendment 50 - No

Casino-table stakes have no place in the constitution.

Amendment 51 - No

Helping disabled kids is a worthy goal, but an earmarked sales tax is the wrong means.

Amendment 52 - No

Diverting gas severance tax revenue to I-70 ignores the rest of Colorado.

Amendment 53 - Withdrawn

Amendment 54 - No

See Amendment 47. Touted as good government, 54 is an attack on unions' political activity.

Amendment 55, 56, 57 - Withdrawn

Amendment 58 - Yes

Effectively increases gas severance tax to fund college scholarships.

Amendment 59 - Yes

Ends TABOR-required rebates and uses money to fund education, replacing Amendment 23, which has tangled up state finance.

Referendum L - Yes

Lowers age requirement for legislature to 21.

Referendum M - Yes

Repeals obsolete constitutional language.

Referendum N - Yes.

Repeals more obsolete constitutional language.

Referendum O - Yes

Reforms initiative process to make it easier to change state laws and harder to amend the already-unwieldy Colorado Constitution.

Montezuma County Referred Measure 3A - Yes

Dolores school mill levy. Now is not the time to scrimp on education.

Montezuma County Referred Measure 5A - Yes

Cortez Cemetery District. A basic responsibility to fellow citizens.
