Abraham Lincoln was a master of humor in dark hours.He faced constant criticism and was called a clown, a baboon and a lunatic.One newspaper stated that he was the most dishonest politician that ever disgraced an office in America.Lincoln felt these attacks acutely, but he often used humor to respond.During one debate, Lincoln was accused of being a two-faced man.His reply:I leave it to my audience.If I had another face, do you think I would wear this one?The crowd erupted in laughter.When asked by a friend at a sober moment why he was always telling stories and jokes, Lincoln replied:I laugh because I must not cry; that is all that is all.Life is full of stress and pain, but there is also humor to be found in life.And it is a mark of a genuinely joyful individual to lighten up and strengthen the heart with the wise use of humor.
Joy isnt found by avoiding trouble.Disappointments are a certain part of life.Joy is found when lifes pleasures and lifes sorrows all share a common purpose.Its the purpose toward which your career, your family, your faith, and your social efforts move that gives joy to your trials and your triumphs.Fill your life with joy by focusing your life on meaning.Thats a big assignment that requires a lifetime of learning, but its fundamental to the development of true joy.When a person experiences difficulty, the sadness is real, but it does not dim the hope that enlivens the heart.Joyfulness isnt about the absence of difficulty.It is about the presence of purpose.Joyfulness is the quality of a life in proper focus.
At home you can design a one-month Joyfulness Award for your family.Explain that it is right to be joyful even when circumstances dont go as intended. The reward can be a special recognition for those who, during the month, demonstrate joyfulness even during times of difficulty or disappointment.
