Our forgotten apples

U.S. grant will help unravel genetic history of county’s historic orchards

Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project officials hope DNA testing will be able to identify what are believed to be Ben Davis apples, harvested recently from an abandoned century-old orchard near Lebanon.
Dave Sanford puts apples into the press to make apple juice at the recent Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project social. The restoration project is working to restore the area’s apple prominence, and a new $52,630 grant will be used to collect leaf tissue to genetically identify those lost varieties.
