Southwest water experts target lawns to save farms
Sod buster bill

What it does: Limits lawns on new homes to 15 percent of the lot, if the builders buy agricultural water rights.
Where it applies: Colorado Springs and Aurora are two of the larger cities to which it would apply.
Who’s for it: Western Slope water conservation districts. Sponsors include Sen. Ellen Roberts, R-Durango, Rep. Don Coram, R-Montrose, Rep. Ed Vigil, D-Fort Garland and Sen. Mary Hodge, D-Brighton.
Who’s against it: The Colorado Association of Home Builders. Local governments oppose the bill’s mandates.
Next up: A hearing in the Senate Agriculture, Natural Resources and Energy Committee has not yet been scheduled.
