Tax campaign keeps low profile

Proponents of school tax increase beat the bushes, not the airwaves
Lawsuit seeks to kick amendment off ballot

DENVER – Opponents of the Amendment 66 tax increase for schools filed suit Wednesday to kick the question off the ballot.
The lawsuit in Denver District Court alleges that petitions for Amendment 66 were gathered improperly.
“We’re trying to ensure the integrity of the ballot process,” said Kelly Maher, a member of Coloradans for Real Education Reform.
Andrew Freedman, director of the pro-Amendment 66 campaign, said he learned of the lawsuit through a news release after 5 p.m.
“Without seeing the filing, we have no comment other than to say we are fully confident Colorado voters this fall will retain the right to vote on Amendment 66 and investing more in our schools,” Freedman said in an email.
The campaign submitted 89,820 valid signatures – fewer than 4,000 above the threshold to get on the ballot.
