Underground fire has been burning since summer 2018
Burning coal takes on a vivid glow in a coal seam fire northeast of Dolores.

This coal seam fire was discovered Oct. 9 about 15 miles northeast of Dolores on the San Juan National Forest. The area is unstable and hot and should be avoided.
Fissures have formed in the ground where a coal seam fire is burning northeast of Dolores. The fire is being monitored by the San Juan National Forest.
