Saving the Old Spanish Trail

Western trade routes may be thousands of years old

This etching, “On the Santa Fe Trail” attributed to Frederic Remington, depicts just a few of the many thousands of travelers who used the trails of western expansion. The Santa Fe Trail from Missouri to Santa Fe and points west intersects with the Old Spanish National Historic Trail from Santa Fe to Los Angeles. The Old Spanish Trail Association is mapping and helping preserve these routes.
The Saltillo Serape design comes from northern Mexico and is indicative of the expansive trade over the Old Spanish and Santa Fe Trails. This specimen is held by Fort Lewis College’s Center for Southwest Studies.
