With a recently passed city ordinance, Cortez residents can now raise chickens in their backyards if they comply with certain rules. Those interested in starting their own brood can join the High Desert Homesteading class on Wednesday for the fifth in a series of eight seminars. This week's topic: raising poultry for meat and eggs. The instructor is Sheldon Zwicker, who comes from one of the oldest pioneer families in Montezuma County and holds a degree in poultry from Colorado State University.

The seminar is from 7-9 p.m. at Let It Grow Nursery and Garden Market (90 North Mildred Rd). Cost is $15 per person, cash and checks accepted.

After poultry, the remaining seminars cover backyard livestock (April 17); orchards and vineyards (April 24); and bees and beekeeping (May 1).
