The new year’s rarest event features Mercury

Mercury will cross between the sun and Earth on Nov. 11. Viewers will need protective solar filters or glasses like those used during last year’s Great American Eclipse.
The Quadrantids meteor shower begins late Thursday and runs through dawn Friday. The southwestern and central U.S. offer the best views.
