Archaeology society to meet Jan. 6
The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society will present Dan Simplicio at 7 p.m. Jan. 6 at the Methodist Church, 515 Park St. in Cortez.
Simplicio will discuss “‘Besides Jewelry:’ Other Uses of Turquoise by the A:shiwi (Zuni) People.” He will discuss how turquoise is understood and used by the Zuni people as well as how this relationship has changed through time.

Agri-Women accepting scholarship apps
The Colorado Agri-Women are currently accepting scholarship applications.
One scholarship will be awarded to a Colorado high school senior girl majoring in any agriculture area who attends a vocational or tradition college program in 2015.
The simple application can be found on the Colorado Agri-Women website, www.ColoraodAgriWomen.org, and must be postmarked by Feb. 10, 2015.
The $400 scholarship will be presented at the annual Colorado Agri-Women meeting March 21, 2015.

Mesa Verde announces holiday hours
Mesa Verde National Park is open through the holiday season, with limited services on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. On Christmas and New Year’s Day, the park road and overlooks are open, but visitor facilities are closed for the day. Specifics are listed by location below.
The Visitor Center: Open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, except Christmas Day, December 26, and New Year’s Day.
The Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum and the Museum bookstore are open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Spruce Tree House, the park’s best preserved cliff dwelling, opens for free ranger-guided tours at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. daily, except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Check with the ranger at the information desk for tour details.
The Mesa Top Loop, a 6-mile self-guided driving tour that stops at a series of stabilized archeological sites that illustrate the changes in Ancestral Pueblo life and architecture over time, is open every day until sunset, weather permitting.
The Spruce Tree Terrace café, operated by the park’s concessioner, Aramark, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. A limited food and drinks menu is available.
Library announces Storytime theme
“Midwinter Fun” is the January theme of Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park St., Cortez.
Our preschool Storytime program is held every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Older children are welcome to join us for a craft at 11:15 a.m.
