Durango digs out after floods

Roads, yards flood after early morning storm brings 2 inches of rain
Two Durango properties in the 300 block of East Fourth Avenue were flooded with several feet of water after 2 inches of rain fell overnight. The aftermath of the storm was seen in several areas as city crews, residents and business owners worked Sunday to clean up.
Authorities traced the origin of this dumpster, found Sunday morning near East Third Avenue, to the top of Goeglein Gulch Road. It had been carried off by flood waters during the early-morning’s deluge.
A common sight Sunday morning: Vehicle owners all over Durango’s downtown found their cars engulfed in branches, mud and debris. Several private and commercial properties also were covered in the aftermath of flash flooding.
High velocity, flash flooding ripped apart asphalt on Goeglein Gulch Road near the site of a clogged storm drain Sunday morning. While many areas were affected by the torrents from Sunday’s storm, areas below and near Goeglein Gulch sustained the most damage.
Todd Youngblood surveys several feet of water in his neighbor’s and his yards. “Nothing like having a swimming pool in your front yard when you wake up,” he said. “It’s the most water we’ve ever had here.”
