The black goat that entertained local Dolores residents for years may be gone, but its memory may live on thanks to Laura Getts, who has named her coffeehouse in Cortez “The Black Goat.”
Getts always liked the goat, so she wanted to pay tribute to the animal that has now disappeared.
Keeping with local traditions, The Black Goat will serve as much local produce, meat and baked goods as possible. The menu includes bratwurst made locally, plus produce and eggs from area farms. The list of crepes, made from farm fresh eggs, includes chicken, feta and pesto with local produce to enhance the flavor. The menu will change depending on what is in season at the local farms.
The Black Goat, at Main and Ash streets, is next door to Mr. Happy’s Bakery and Cafe and serves bread rolls for the bratwurst plus baked goods from its neighbor.
On Sunday, The Black Goat sponsors a classic car rally, giving a free ice cream to anyone who drives in with a classic car. Some of the unique flavors at The Black Goat include vegan, made with almond milk, Turkish ice and Caribbean coffees.
While enjoying the fare, customers can take advantage of the free Wi-Fi.
Getts is working on landscaping around the small building and will be adding more tables. In addition to the ice cream, sundaes and gelato, she plans to add homemade ice cream.
On Saturdays, Getts sells crepes at the farmers market, and she plans to set up at local events such as the county fair.
The Black Goat is open Monday through Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and on Sunday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
