Junk pile to artistic style

Vultures bring a unique look to Belt Salvage
Bill Teetzel clowns around with his sculpture on top of Belt Salvage. He plans to add more funny sculptures along Highway 491 through Cortez to slow traffic and get people thinking about Cortez as a creative place with something good going on.

Bill Tetzel works on getting the largest of the vultures staged the way he wants. This particular bird was six feet tall with a wingspan of 10 feet wide.
Jimmy Herrick, crane operator, hangs one of the vultures onto the cable to hoist into the air. The entire process of lifting and placing the birds took about four hours.
Jimmy Herrick leaves the site after hooking up the car to the crane. The car was picked out of the salvage yard by the artists who had to craftily lessen its weight so that it may sit atop the building.
