Shopping Consignment or Thrift

Here are some tips to get the most out of your consignment and thrift store shopping.

Know when to shop. The first of the week is good because people clean out their closets over the weekend but consignment stores usually get new stuff everyday.

If you love it, buy it. Chances are when you return, it will be gone.

Inspect items carefully. Consignment shops hand-pick merchandise and thrift stores try not to put out damaged items, but everyone makes mistakes.

Bargain at will. Pieces that have been in the store for some time and show damage from shelf life, hanger marks or sagging may go for an extra 10 percent off.

Bring cash. Most of these stores do not accept anything else.

Set a budget and don't get carried away. It's easy to spend more than you intend when things are priced so low, but make sure you are buying the item not the price.

Be patient and make time. Thrift stores can have a lot of items and sometimes the store is a bit disorganized. Plan on looking for awhile.

Try on clothing if you can. Previous owners can alter sizes. Or, oppositely, if you can and know you will alter items, buy outside of your size.

The most important thing to remember is to be open-minded. You never know what you might find in your neighborhood store.
