Wilda L. Cone
Wilda L. Cone — loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend — died peacefully at age 95 on April 3, 2012 in Cortez. She arrived in Cortez in 2005 and lived at Aspen Gardens under the care of Valley Jean Williford.
Born on July 5, 1916, in Worthington, Ohio, Wilda married W. Henry Cone and raised her four children in Florida, Massachusetts, and South Carolina. She then moved with her husband and younger son to Denver, and later lived in Cincinnati and Akron, Ohio, where Henry taught. They retired to Colorado Springs in 1991.
Music, art, and poetry were important parts of Wilda’s life. She was a brilliant cook who loved to entertain. A gifted musician and poet, she gave her family and friends great pleasure with her songs and verses and was an active member of choirs and choruses — singing alto — wherever she lived. She was a talented artist-archivist, who saved photographs and memorabilia and created loving scrapbook tributes to all her children and grandchildren.
Wilda volunteered with many organizations: Head Start in Denver, as well as Meals on Wheels, children’s homes, and Friends of the Denver Library. She was an active den mother to both Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, played piano and organ for residents in assisted-living communities, and joined her husband as a volunteer for his beloved Habitat for Humanity. As a member of the Broadmoor Community Church in Colorado Springs, she belonged to the Women’s Fellowship.
Wilda was preceded in death by Henry, her husband of 67 years, her two sons, Bill Cone of Cortez and Jack Cone of Denver, and her twin sister, Wilma Turner, of Bradenton, Fla and three other siblings.
She is survived by her daughters, Polly Cone of San Diego, Calif., and Carole Doolittle of Clearwater, Fla., and by her daughter-in-law, Patsy Cone of Cortez. Her grandchildren also survive her: Kristen Jarae of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Craig Cone of Austin, Texas, Brian Cone of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Sally Cone of Washington, D.C. Her two great-grandsons, twins Nicholas and Cade Jarae, live in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
A small family memorial will be held in Myrtle Beach, S.C. in May 2012.
