New owner changing Oasis tanning salon
The Oasis of Cortez, a tanning salon, is undergoing a transformation after changing hands.
Gayel Alexander bought The Beach on North Broadway in January and is working on updating the building.
Alexander is a fourth-generation rancher and was looking for a new business venture after leaving the Cortez Retail Enhancement Association.
“One business wasn’t enough to keep me busy,” she said.
The salon is still a members-only establishment and is open 24/7.
Since Alexander took ownership, she has increased the lighting in the parking lot for those who choose to tan in the early morning and updated the security system.
She co-owns the business with her daughter Kaytlyn Alexander.

La Plata County Fairgrounds is closed to horses
The La Plata County Fairgrounds is off-limits to all horse-related activity because of a possible link between equines and a horse infected with equine herpesvirus in Eagle.
No horses will be allowed on the premises until at least May 30, Mark McKibben, director of general services for La Plata County, said Friday.
Equine herpesvirus can take various forms, Dr. Nick Striegel, assistant state veterinarian, said Friday. It can cause respiratory problems, can cause mares to abort foals and, in its most severe form, result in neurological problems that interfere with the blood supply and result in the loss of brain and spinal-cord functions.
Equine herpesvirus can be transmitted horse to horse, Striegel said.
The 4-H Gymkhana set for Sunday has been rescheduled for June 14.

Map plots New Mexico oil and gas spills
A new website has mapped where oil- and gas-related spills take place in New Mexico, and it shows their numbers have increased in recent years.
The Center for Western Priorities built the online map using years of data gathered by the state Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department’s Oil Conservation Division,.
The Denver-based, nonpartisan organization monitors spills caused by crude oil, drilling fluids and methane releases, among others, and then shows their locations on the map. It does the same for Colorado.
