Mitchell Springs in 1882 was a welcome rest for travelers

The mossy Mitchell Springs is located on the east side of McElmo. When in use, the area was enclosed with a pole fence. Many people obtained their drinking water from these springs. This photo was taken in 2000.
There are two inscriptions on the rock wall above the springs, a set of initials and a carving of a heart.
The town of Big Bend on the Dolores River is shown in about 1887 — one year after the Harris Brothers opened their bank and store after leaving Mitchell Springs in 1886. This is a north-south street scene. The store is the second to last building on the right. The Harris Brothers served the Big Bend community until they moved to Dolores in 1892.
Mitchell Springs (under the rock), located on the west side of McElmo, is shown in a 2000 photo. This spring may have been used by the men hauling water to the town of Cortez, as evidence of a possible wagon road was found above the site.
